TANGWEN, UGANDA - FILTER ROAST

Coffees from Uganda don't have solid ground in the specialty coffee market, the country has a long coffee tradition and notably claims Canephora (aka Robusta) as an indigenous coffee species. However, the Arabica species preferred by the specialty industry has been put to the side by the lack of financial return in the Ugandan market and significant gaps in infrastructure that hinder quality. All of the requirements for quality are there - volcanic soils, good rainfall and high altitudes - along with farming communities keen to use coffee as a vehicle for better lives.

After working on the ground in the Mt Elgon region since 2005, the NGO 'JENGA Community Development' saw the potential and heard the demand from the communities they worked with, and decided to start the Zukuka Bora Coffee Company. With coffee farmers at the heart of this project - and as joint shareholders - the team at Zukuka Bora set out to support farmers with the right tools, training, financing and, critically, the establishment of local mills to process their coffee. Not only does Zukuka Bora purchase ripe coffee from the farming communities surrounding these mills at a 20% premium to market rates, they also provide a bonus to farmers during 'the hungry season' - the middle of the season when farmers' money is invested in plantations, waiting on new crops. Now providing fairly-paid work for over 100 people during harvest in remote mountain areas, Zukuka Bora's profits go on to fund Jenga's education sponsorships, clean water schemes, health promotion and much more.

Tangwen is a small community above the magnificent Sipi Falls. A smaller group of producers that started working with Zukuka Bora in 2017. Several companies are operating in Sipi, but Zukuka Bora quickly liaised with a lead farmer, Moses, who was keen to see the benefits of specialty coffee reach his remote community on the edge of Mt Elgon National Park. The gardens in Sipi are well cared for and there is a deep knowledge of coffee among producers. Farmers from Tangwen also produce the sought-after SL28 varietal, which has been in much demand internationally. This coffee showcases potential for specialty coffee in Uganda with iconic traits found in the SL28 mixed with SL14 varieties, an elevated acidity lends to a unique marmalade sweetness and a fuller sensation in mouthfeel.
