The story of Aurelio Villatoro begins from his earliest memories, growing up surrounded by coffee on his father's coffee farm, Finca La Esperanza. Recognising the legacy and significance of coffee in Guatemala, Aurelio knew his dream was to own his own farm from a young age. After a year away to further his education, he returned home and reunited with his father to learn all about coffee from the most experienced farmer he knew.

Aurelio purchased his farm in 1986, which he named after a combination of his first and last names, and Finca Villaure was born. Since he plotted his first coffee trees, Aurelio's commitment to holding the highest standard of coffee quality and agricultural discipline hasn't wavered. Today, Aurelio's two sons are part of the family business and work at Finca Villaure, venturing together into new varieties, practices, and innovation. To date, he's competed in four 'Cup Of Excellence' auctions, received several national and international awards, and even has been cited as 'Best Farmer in Guatemala' and 'Best Farmer in Huehuetenango'.

Huehuetenango - 'Huehue' for short (pronounced 'whe-whe') - is the highest and driest growing region in Guatemala, with landscapes reaching over 2000 meters in elevation. Huehue is one of the more remote regions in Guatemala, and transporting coffee by oxen or on the backs of farmers was the norm of the past. However, in exchange for the challenges of outlying, farmers are gifted with rich, natural water sources, allowing for independent processing.

While Spanish is the national language, the region's locals speak 12 different Mayan dialects in many Guatemalan towns and developing communities, so reaching out to smaller farming groups come with language barriers as a considerable challenge. Also, many small villages still enforce self-policing and don't permit outsiders into their towns or properties. Our coffee trading partners, Coffeebird, find their introductions to these native communities through their existing networks and trusted relationships on the ground.

This 2021 harvest came with unpredictable rainfall resulting in smaller yields for the year, on top of difficulties with labour shortage for pickers across the country. However, our partners at Coffeebird are dedicated to supporting their farming partners through good and bad times, ensuring the high-quality coffees they produce continue to be valuable and sustainable opportunities.
