La Estrella comes from 126 different producers from the department of Nueva Segovia, situated 225 km from Nicaragua’s capital, Managua. This is a region very close to the border with Honduras and is part of the Cordillera de Dipilto – Jalapa Natural Reserve, a place with a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. The name La Estrella (meaning star) comes from the Beneficio La Estrella, located in the municipality of Ocotal. In 2015, Caravela created a blend of different coffees from producers living close to the mill. La Estrella blend is possible thanks to outstanding new coffee producers and long-term partners from different municipalities around Nueva Segovia such as Macuelizo, Dipilto, San Fernando, Mozonte and Jalapa.
This is a model implemented across all origins where our producing partners, Caravela, operates to maximize producers’ opportunities, market access, and profitability opportunities by purchasing small lots and building them up into larger blends with specific flavor profiles. Nueva Segovia is known as the cradle of specialty coffee in Nicaragua, where most of the producers are proud to show recognition and awards for producing the best coffees. The micro-climates in Nueva Segovia provide optimal conditions for producing top-notch coffees.
Caravela is proud of the Nicaraguan producers and the partnerships they have established for more than 6 years; producers have risen to the challenges and have been open and willing to make changes despite the adversities that the country and the coffee industry have experienced in recent years.
